Every October 1st, we celebrate International Day of Older Persons, established by the United Nations in 1990, to recognize the invaluable contributions of our elders and raise awareness about the issues they face.

Their wisdom, experiences, and sacrifices have profoundly shaped our families, communities, and societies. As the Kenyan proverb wisely states, "A village without elders is like a well without water."

This day serves as a poignant reminder to honor their legacy and express our gratitude. Their stories, traditions, and values enrich our lives and bridge the gap between generations as they take on new roles—whether as grandparents, mentors, or volunteers. Their continued engagement fosters intergenerational connections.

We must also acknowledge the challenges older individuals face, such as social isolation and age discrimination. Our collective responsibility is to ensure they enjoy lives of dignity, respect, and fulfillment. We should advocate for policies that support their well-being and ensure their voices are included in decision-making.

On this special day, let’s celebrate by spending time with our elders, listening to their stories, and learning from their wisdom. Let’s express our love and appreciation today and every day. Their legacy is our inheritance, and it’s our responsibility to carry it forward with pride.
