Even though both of my parents were doctors, they deeply appreciated natural remedies. Growing up, our medicine cabinet held prescription medications and an array of herbs, spices, and oils. It might seem contradictory, but my parents believed in a balanced approach to health, recognizing the value of modern medicine and time-tested natural solutions.

This unique upbringing instilled in me a lifelong respect for the healing potential of the natural world. Here are three home remedies from my childhood that continue to be staples in my wellness routine:

1. Coconut Oil Hair Massage


A coconut oil hair massage was a regular part of my self-care growing up. My mother, a pediatrician, would warm up coconut oil and gently massage it into my scalp and hair. Not only did it feel amazing, but it also left my hair soft and shiny.
Coconut oil is deeply nourishing, helping to prevent protein loss and promote healthy hair growth.

2. Ginger for Nausea

Whenever I felt nauseous, my grandmother would brew ginger tea. The warm, spicy flavor was comforting and always worked wonders to settle my stomach. Ginger contains compounds with anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea properties, making it practical for motion sickness, morning sickness, and other digestive issues.

3. Clove for Cough


Chewing on a clove was my go-to remedy for coughs and sore throats. Its strong, spicy flavor provided immediate relief, and the numbing effect helped soothe any irritation.
Cloves contain eugenol, a compound with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that help fight infections and reduce inflammation.

While my parents had access to the latest medical advancements, they also valued simple, natural remedies. They taught me that true health embraces both conventional medicine and the wisdom of traditional practices.
